Your systems are not slow. Your network is.

How structured cabling and business-grade switching change everyday performance in an office, shop or hotel.

When the till freezes, the cameras drop out or the accounting software takes a minute to open a screen, the software gets the blame. New laptops are bought. The internet provider is called. Very often none of that helps, because the fault is in the cable and the small plastic box everything plugs into.

How most small business networks grow

A network in a growing business is rarely designed. It accretes. A router from the internet provider goes on a shelf. A cheap switch is added when the ports run out. A cable is run along the skirting to the new till and another is thrown over the ceiling tiles to the back office. Wi-Fi is extended with a repeater from the market. Each step was sensible at the time. Together they produce a network nobody understands and nothing can rely on.

The symptoms are familiar. Devices work in one room and not another. Performance drops in the afternoon. A camera goes offline and comes back for no reason. Someone unplugs the wrong cable and half the shop stops.

Cabling is the foundation

Structured cabling means every network point in the building is run back to one central location, terminated properly, labelled and tested. It is not glamorous, but it decides how everything else performs. Cable that is kinked, run next to power, joined with tape or terminated by hand without testing will produce errors that look like slow software.

The right cable grade, installed in trunking or conduit, with a patch panel at the centre, will outlast several generations of the equipment plugged into it. When you move a till or add a camera, you patch a cable rather than running a new one across the floor.

Why the switch matters

The switch is the box that connects everything. The unmanaged consumer switch sold beside phone chargers will pass traffic, but it gives you no visibility, no way to separate traffic and no power for devices that need it. When a camera, a till and a guest's phone are all fighting for the same path, the till loses.

A business-grade switch lets you separate the network into segments so that cameras, tills and staff computers do not interfere with each other, and so that a problem in one does not take down the rest. Many also provide power over the same cable, which means cameras and access points do not need a socket nearby and can be protected by the same UPS as the switch.

Wi-Fi is a service, not a box

Business Wi-Fi is not one router in the corner with the strongest antenna you can find. It is several access points, cabled back to the switch, placed where people actually work and configured to hand devices between them. A guest network for customers and visitors should be separated from the network your tills and cameras use. This is basic security as much as performance.

Power and the internet link

In Nigeria, the network cabinet is where the generator changeover shows up. Every switch, router and recorder should be on a UPS sized to ride through the changeover and the short outages between. A clean, continuous supply prevents the reboots that corrupt recordings and drop connections.

The internet link itself is often the least reliable component. If the business depends on cloud systems, a second connection from a different provider, such as a mobile data router, with automatic failover, is worth more than a faster single line.

What changes when the network is fixed

Software that felt slow opens promptly. Cameras stay online and remote viewing stops buffering. Tills do not freeze at the busiest hour. Adding a device is a matter of patching a cable rather than planning an afternoon. And when something does go wrong, a labelled patch panel and a managed switch mean the fault can be found in minutes rather than by unplugging things until it stops.

Where to begin

Ask someone to draw your current network. If they cannot, that is the answer. A proper survey will list every device, every cable and every switch, and will show what needs to be replaced and what can stay. In most small businesses the work is a few days of cabling, a switch and a UPS, and it is done once.
